Overview

An Exploration is created in the Reporter, either from the Data Sources module or directly via the dedicated Explorations module. It enables you to analyze a data source by displaying it as:

  • A dynamic list of values
  • Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Scheduled reports (see dedicated article)

Explorations can be used to gain insight into your operational data and build custom dashboards.

I-Access rights

To access and manage Explorations, a user must have the appropriate permissions in their Role, configured in the Maker.

Required access (via role settings)

Users must have access to:

  • The Reporter module
  • Data Sources
  • Explorations

Two additional permissions specific to Explorations can be granted in the Role:

  • Create
  • Export

Other access rights are managed directly in the Reporter, at the individual Exploration level.

Owner vs guest rights

When creating an exploration, the creator automatically becomes an owner. They can then invite other users as guests, either during creation or later on. A guest can be converted into an owner by another owner.

  • Owners can:
    • Create, modify, and delete KPIs and scheduled reports
    • Add or remove guests and co-owners
    • Apply additional column-based partitioning
  • Guests can:
    • View the Exploration and all its columns
    • Access KPIs and scheduled reports
    • Create dashboards
    • View the list of users and their permissions (read-only)
    • View column partitioning settings (read-only)

Admin role

A user with the Administrator role has extended rights:

  • They can view all explorations of the client account, regardless of ownership or guest status.
  • They can assign themselves as the owner of any exploration.

II-The explorations tab

List of explorations

In the Explorations tab of the Reporter module, you’ll find a list of all Explorations to which you have access. A search bar lets you filter them by name.

Available actions depend on your rights:

  • Guests can open the exploration and view its history.
  • Owners can also modify or delete the exploration.

Clicking Open gives you access to the data in table format, based on the linked data source.

Note: limits are managed in the client account settings, in the Maker. See the dedicated article here.

Creating an exploration

To create a new Exploration, click + CREATE.

You’ll be invited to configure the following:

  • Name of the Exploration
  • Type: choose between
    • Preconfigured KPIs (available only for a selection of data sources)
    • From scratch
  • Data source to use
  • Users to invite as guests

Once created, the Exploration will be accessible from the list.

Working with an exploration

Explorations display your data in columns, which you can:

  • Reorganize via drag-and-drop (note: this is not persistent if you refresh the page)
  • Configure each column via the cogwheel icon (not persistent):
    • Filter the column
    • Hide the column (owner only)
    • Rename the column (owner only)

You can also:

  • Add columns by clicking the top-right cogwheel icon and selecting Add columns
  • Export data, if your Role includes export rights
  • Duplicate an exploration (includes its content and partitioning, but not the user rights)

III-KPIs tab

KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) provide a graphical way to track and visualize relevant metrics.

👉 For more information, see the dedicated KPIs article.

IV-Scheduled reports tab

Scheduled reports allow you to receive Exploration data via email at regular intervals.

👉 For details, refer to the Scheduled reports article.

V-User rights tab

This tab shows all users who have access to the exploration.

If you are the owner, you can modify other users’ permissions, adding or removing guests or co-owners.

VI-Partitioning tab

Partitioning lets you filter the data by restricting which column values are displayed. Unlike filters applied directly in the exploration view, partitioning is persistent across sessions and refreshes.

Only owners can modify partitioning settings. Guests can view partitioning but cannot change it.
